Opium Wars- Imperialism in China

This war was one of the very first drug wars and took place in china. Known as the Opium War it is also known for the Algo- chinese war. The drug was produced and shipped in from the East indies to china by the British. It got the chinese addicted to this drug in the early 1800s. When opium was first introduced to china, it was used for diseases like dysentery, cholera, and also diarrhea. The british during the 1700 discovered that opium could be mixed with tobacco to be smoked. During the 1800s chinese green tea became very popular and high in demand from the western countries. When chinese gorvernment realized that the british merchants were selling the opium drug was being sold to the chinese. Until 1838 the opium drug was restricted from trade , The emperor wrote a letter to Queen Victoria asking why it was illegal in their country but selling china such harmful drugs. The letter unfortunately was never delivered directly to the Queen. Since the chinese warriors thought that the queen never acknowledged the letter than it the warriors thought that it challenged them. Chinese officials destroyed the opium drug and banned english man from china. China was unaware of the british attacking, China was unaware of the attack and their advanced technologies and China was very behind when it came to their weapons. China was as a result defeated by Great Britain and forced to sign a treaty.

Film lesson - " Mountains of the moon"

Two english explorers traveled down the middle of africa where no white men have traveled before. Searching on their expedition the source of the nile river. They traveled with african men to for their search but unfortunately men died from malaria and many other mosquitoes diseases. One of the men ended up killing him self due to that him and his partner didn't agree on their stance of finding their source. They traveled for seven months with their men and reached many villages they had to offer gifts for to the king, and many men left upon the nights robbing their materials and gave up. A lot of them died from starvation and diseases from infected waters from thirst. They named the source of the nile river Lake Victoria which is ironic since its an british queen name put onto an african territory. Europe conquered Africa's men in their industrial advancement from time to time and most Africans had never even witnessed a gun before. So, it was an easy conquer for the europeans.

Imperialism project

I think we were assigned the imperialism project to understand how things are traded and where they are. Most of the students have no clue of where there natural sources come from: like spices, gold, and silver. I learned that many things were imported from Africa, and especially the need for slaves. I also learned that many of European countries dominated other foreign countries that were unknown during that time.

Karl Marx and Communism

Karl Marx is a communist and believe that everyone should get an equal amount of share in their paychecks. He knew that in the future, times like today, people will become greedy with money and needy with the things they want. Marx studied phylosiphies in Berlin and Bonn, in 1848 Marx and his coauthor Engels published this book called " The Communist Manifesto". The wrote quotes like " workers in the world!- unite!". The Manifesto set down many principles , Marx felt like it was a struggle against capitalists owners and their workers. He made drawings supporting his thoughts on how capitalism supported pollution, it did not help the enviroment and peoples lives were being driven away on their hard work. He also wrote literally 10,000 on the enviroment and how capitalism isnt helping it from its pollutions and multiple needs of factories. According to Karl "capitalism contained its own seeds of destruction". Many people thought like Marx but in time capitalism did win from our wars because of their increasing weaponary and machines that communists didnt have or could afford. It was an open hearted idea for Marx to think like that, then their wouldnt be any destruction and wars like their is today and for technology between the people.

Karl Marx and the Industrial Revolution

Karl Marx was a russian man, like any other. Marx was born a jew but his dad converted his family into christians in order to get jobs. He didnt believe in god and he thought workers were being controlled by religion. Marx died in 1883 but he revolutionized in 1917, with his ideas.

He thought that industrial life for men was too harsh and difficult to keep up with in just one day. He wanted men to own their own farms and live off their own trade. Ideas built up in his head, that, men should unite and create a revolution. His ideas were known for communism, which is another word for common. He thought workers should share their wealth and make it an equal fair shared society. He quoted " From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs".

Nationalism and the creation of Italy

Nationalism is a form of the way you represent your country and how your proud of it. It stands for loyalty and respect for its nation. It is the same culture and history a nation of people share the same belief of. The first nation to win independently was Greece. Greece wanted to take its place as an independent state of Europe. The Greeks broke out on 1821 of Ottoman Turks.

In western Europe the congress of Vienna was breaking apart. Many were ruled by Austria others by the pope. The prime minister sent to troops to restore peace and order in Italy. Italy was one of the countries that reformed while the other empires were destroyed. Between 1815 and 1848, numbers grew for italians to no longer be ruled by foreigners.

Italy wasn't always an independent country, it was controlled by Austria and ruled their Italian provinces. In 1832, a young man by the age of 26 Giuseppe Mazzini had arranged a national group called young Italy and the requirements were you had to be younger than 40 years of age. His rebellion failed in 1848 as it did for many other empires. In 1870, Italian forces took over the very last part of the territory known as the papal states, Venice became part of Italy.

Italy also faced many economic problems. The Italian government couldnt handle the economic problems they had been facing with Italy. Italy had entered the 20th century an unwealthy country.

The Enlightenment

John Locke inspired many people of the 1800's , many people you wouldn't believe. A lot of them were inspired by his idea many who were known to sign the declaration of independence. The word enlightenment is a word used from western philosophy known as cultural life. John Locke had a strong influence on modern democracy.

The idea of the declaration independence was an inspiration of words of John Locke that Thomas Jefferson enforced. John Locke enforced many ideas but he mostly believed in us knowing things. His protests were limited but it help set a direction for the people. Many citizens adapted
ideas and they applied to all and guaranteed religious freedom.

Copernicus and the trial of Galileo

There were many theories of the solar system but were focusing on the heliocentric and the geocentric. The heliocentric theory is a theory arguing that the sun is the middle body of the solar system and everything else revolves around the sun. The theory came from a Greek philosopher explaining that the world was a sphere from observing the eclipse of the moon and that the earths shadow is always round.

The geocentric theory is that the earth is in the middle and everything revolved around the earth which in the other hand the heliocentric theory believes that the sun was the center of the universe. Aristarchus of Samos tried to measure the sun in units by measuring up the size of the moon. Instead he used the distance of time to calculate the sun's distance from the earth. The moon was calculated about 1/4 of the earth and the sun.

He concluded that the sun was way larger than the earth and thought it was reasonable that the earth in fact did revolve around the sun. Giving proof to the heliocentric theoy, which was that the sun was being revolved by everything and it was the the middle of the universe. The theory that came out of scientific revolution was heliocentric theory.I believe the heliocentric theory is more accurate because they had proof that the sun was in fact bigger than the earth and it was the center of the universe.

Galileo an Italian teacher teaching his students about evolution and got arrested for it. He gained many enemies for this belief. Especially where he lived in the the bible belt which meant the southern part which Galileo lived in was very religious. This trial was a fascinating trial because it showed two parts of two different ways from the same belief of men and one in particular grew out of his religious belief. At the age of 22 Galileo had invented the hydrostatic balance. He was known as the father of physics. They believe his motto he followed was " Follow knowledge wherever it leads you". His invention of the telescope gave proof to the Copernican system. His belief in the Copernican system was "four moons orbiting around Jupiter like a miniature planetary system". He began giving lectures of his observations and theories. Galileo thought he would have many followers because of his proof and his invention of the telescope.

He began to notice that the Copernican theory had its enemies. This trial was taken many days for its decision, he was sentenced guilty and was read this in the court....

"And, so that you will be more cautious in future, and an example for others to abstain from delinquencies of this sort, we order that the book Dialogue of Galileo Galilei be prohibited by public edict. We condemn you to formal imprisonment in this Holy Office at our pleasure.Add Video

As a salutary penance we impose on you to recite the seven penitential psalms once a week for the next three years. And we reserve to ourselves the power of moderating, commuting, or taking off, the whole or part of the said penalties and penances.

This we say, pronounce, sentence, declare, order and reserve by this or any other better manner or form that we reasonably can or shall think of. So we the undersigned Cardinals pronounce." Galileo was very disappointing in all his hard work and solid proof. As of me i do not believe evolution but everyone has in their will to believe whatever they please.

Scientific Revolution

Scientific Revolution was an important era during the 1500s because all scientists tried to make new ideas and theorys for a remmemberance in history. Scientific Revolution is a period of many advances and Galileo was a very popular italian Astronomer and Physicist from those times who gave pretty much Aristotle a hard time for his theory's and always tried to make it accurate.

This great scientist Aristotle had a theory that heavier things fall faster on the ground than lighter things would. Galileo went to the tower of pisa in italy and studied this theory even though Aristotle had many years making it a prooven and right theory. Galileo went to the tower and dropped a bowling ball and a baseball and measured up the time the got to the ground and he discovered that the theory was in fact not true.

Turned out to tbe a blunder to the poor people that believed him and for Aristotle. There were many philosophers and scientist during this time with many theories during roughly around middle ages known as the renaissance times. Renaissance also means a dark age where nothing was really developed and the scientist had a greater chance to become remmembered.

Evolution Vs. Creation

50% believe
Evolution

-we were made of organisms
-humans evolved
-primates
-Charles Darwin

Evolution is a different system of belief, there's creationism and evolution which the majority of the 50% are scientists or nonreligious people. Evolution is a sought after theory that hasn't been really established. The theory specifies that us humans go through a set of stages as organisms, to fish, to primates, and to the stage we are now as humans. There is not much proof explaining the beginning of this belief or how it happened but, they do have controversies trying to out explain the creationism which brings a lot of doubt to us humans and that is why we make it our choice to believe. Charles Darwin was a teacher who taught students about evolution and had a theory and studied it but got arrested because at the time it was illegal to teach about evolution. He concluded on going to court and defending his trial.

I think this theory makes more sense and ive grown up in the religious belief. I think the protestants make their religious beliefs more religious because the catholics dont have that much education in the bible.

Vs.

50% believe
Creation

- God created the world
-the bible --> old testament
- Adam and Eve

Creationism is another 50 % belief us humans have. Mostly priests, Catholics, and Christians that are part of this 50% belief we share. It is mostly a culture we have grown larger with, believing the bible and that god created the world. We believe that the history we have and our teachings in church or the bible are mostly from god. There's many reasons why evolution and creationism is a dispute on a regular bases. Scientists don't have proof evolution exists and us religious people don't have a specific proof that Jesus ever existed.

Evolution is only a theory i dont think its pretty accurate . They have many different theories and creationism has been around for many years and evolution was created years after that and i think creationism has been around for a reason it wasnt just made up.
